When he was a young boy in Qingdao, the ex-German colony in Shandong, the artist fell sick. He recovered and left the hospital to a flurry of snow. It was like a fairytale set in the streets of his childhood home. This picture recovers the images of a childhood in the 1960s: Mao the great leader in our hearts, Shanshan the boy soldier, the Cowherd and the Weaver – fairytale lovers from the moon. The picture reminds us that the exuberance of childhood and the energy of revolution are not always incompatible.
